Top tips to reduce negative self-talk dialogues

• See negative behaviour as a mirror to the child or young person’s perceptions of either themselves or the situation. This knowledge can help us to respond with greater compassion even in the most extreme situations

• When a child or young person is behaving in a way that is inappropriate, make it very clear what you want from them and why. However, it is also hugely important to remind them that you see them as better than the behaviour that they are presenting. Children with emotional and behavioural issues need to be reminded that your expectations of them are high not low

• Challenge negative thinking whenever you hear it. Young people can make progress from having an understanding and some insight into what it is that they are experiencing. By helping children and young people understand the process, we can guide them through a journey of self-discovery and autonomy

• If children and young people appear to be engaging in negative self-talk, suggest that they distract those thoughts or reduce the amount of time they spend engaging with them

• Recommend that young people engage in positive self-dialogue to offset the negativity

Questions for discussion with children and young people

1. Do you have any regular negative thoughts? Write them down or talk about them.

2. Can you think of any times when you use the word ‘should’ with yourself?

3. Write down 3 things that you need to do. Write them down as ‘shoulds’ and then turn them to ‘coulds’. How does each sentence make you feel? Discuss.
